Professor Romeela Mohee is the former the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mauritius (2013-2016). She holds an Engineering degree in Energy and Environment from La Grande Ecole d’ingénieurs, Institut National des Sciences Appliquées Lyon, France, and a PhD from the University of Mauritius in collaboration with Clemson University, USA under a Fulbright scholarship in 1996.

Prof Mohee has 25 years of academic experience as a Professor and Head of Department in the field of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, as well as, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 2009 to 2012. She has also held the position of National Research Chair in Solid Waste Management at the Mauritius Research Council. She has over 75 international research and conference papers, editor of 2 books, 4 books chapters and has supervised to date more than 50 Undergraduate and 30 Masters and Doctoral students in the field of energy and environmental engineering.

Prof Mohee’s expertise has been recognised both at national and regional level. She has been Vice President of the Maurice Ile Durable Steering Committee She has also held the position of Environmental Assessor for the Environment and Land Use tribunal (ELAT) from 2011 to 2013.

She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) and has been invited several times as key speaker at international workshops and conferences. She was highly involved in the Rio +20 Conference preparatory meeting for Africa.

Prof Mohee has also been an expert Reviewer for EU projects for the Indian Ocean Region in the field of Environmental Engineering, a Member of Science Engineering and Technology Committee for the Mauritius Research Council, a Team Leader for Country Environment Profile of Mauritius (EU funded Study) and a member of Expost study to evaluate UNDP GEF SGP projects conducted in Mauritius and Rodrigues.

Prof Mohee has carried out more than 20 major consultancy projects in the field of environmental science and engineering including international projects such as Small Developing Island Renewable Energy Knowledge and Technology Transfer Network (DIREKT EU/ACP project); UNESCO/UCSIS project Consortium of Small Island states for the development of a Masters course in Sustainable development …and so many other projects.
